Sisyphus Reborn

Expectations follow me
like stray cats.
They purr and arch
but stay just out of reach.
Although I know better
I always reach out to them.
When they dart away,
I am left empty handed.
But I never learn.

Bio (auto)

Adam Middleton-Watts is an oddball British expat writing from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. When he’s not dissolving in the midst of a savage summer or fattening up for the next brutal winter, he’s writing poems and stories on the backs of unpaid utility bills and drinking too much dark ale. He has had words printed in many a magazine, and can tell a bison from a handsaw.

and then

this day was caught in pockets
of awkwardness
we shifted to and fro
our skins our own and
nearly electric
our heads
(those lofted vaults of secrecy)
nodded and smiled
and revealed so little truth
there was earth beneath our feet
gray whale skies above our crowns

like a deck of shuffled cards
placed face down
it is difficult
to divide this day
from any other
to make it stand
alone
marked as
greater
than its
kin
