New Year’s Eve Poem 2012

Another year passes by
like cloud banks on the horizon
your affair with time doomed
Like a failed love affair
Your early-ignited passion
burned out like a candle
at the end of its wick

You came in dressed
in a sequin gown
with a coy like promise
of a heated love affair
now you scurry away
like a thief in flight
taking with you
your eleven sisters and brothers
you with your ice cold breath
that creeps up my spine
like a spider weaving its web
how nice it must be
to be immortal
born anew year after year
like specs of dust gathering
in the womb of the universe
as I approach my seventy-seventh year
doing a slow shuffle down the street
trying to stay one step ahead
of my trailing shadow

In Appreciation of Anais Nin

Life shrinks or expands
in proportion to one’s courage
– Anais Nin

Today, I found your words on a shelf,
demurely clothed in a dust jacket,
and politely crowned a first edition.
Holding you in my hands,
I realise that there was…
and…
never will be… anyone…
like you,
the perfect fusion
of apocrypha and loveliness
woven into page after page
of your life story,
pouring forth from the delta of Venus
all women want to find within themselves…
the words and tales and faces
and lives and loves
flew forth from your soul
like so many little birds…
and, now, the veil has been lifted…
I have my own truths to tell,
and, I thank you…
