Gnawing at Sky

I saw that lizard
in the bucket
with my tomato plant
changing colors with
the breeze maybe
making him a salamander
but I’m not sure,
I don’t know bugs and things
so I poked him with a stick
but he didn’t move
not this time, but I’d seen
him move before
I thought they could scale
anything
any surface
but the stick did nothing
to stir him like that black
spot over my eye
growing as tunnels
do when you get to the
end and the lights go out
if they were on at all
and the sunglasses
become necessary
again; though I never remove
mine at all
what’s the point
and I didn’t blink or move
kinda like my lizard friend
when the bird flew at it, at
me … I could hear its wings
I could hear the flutter
but I scared it so it flew
away leaving me with my
stick
to poke at Jell-O
which sometimes I mistake
for pudding
they both come in square boxes
for that squishy stuff
that comes with flowers
to hold water in
that’s what the tub was doing
for the tomato
except the salamander
drowned
and nobody came to its
funeral, nobody but me.

Rodney Wood of Farnborough, Hampshire, England has taken poetry up seriously since he retired a few years ago. He also volunteers at a local arts centre where he does front of house work. Published in magazines, anthologies,on the radio and was joint winner in a satirical/humorous poetry competition last year. Strangely, he hasn’t published any books.
