Soft Parade

At Venice Beach’s big bowl
Old school thrasher dude takes photos

While barely bigger than her skateboard
Little girl shreds cement

Then does a hand-plant

She falls on her butt
Smack-dab on the bowl’s lip

And watches her skateboard slide to the bottom

The crowd relaxes and laughs and smiles safely

While oblivious to it all
She dives down

kneepads first
for her

skateboard

Bio (auto)

Charles lives in Fountain Hills, AZ. He started writing poetry 14 years ago to celebrate the birth of his daring, darling, daughter Valerie. He wanted to preserve all the memories of the first time she walked, talked. Valerie was born with many obstacles to overcome giving him much to write about. Writing soon became his way of saving his sanity. Valerie is doing great now; she is quite the young writer. This year he has been published in The Clark Street Review, Plato’s Tavern, Poetswest, Nomad’s Choir, Bellowing Ark, PKA’s Advocate, Pegasus, The Saturday Diner, The American Dissident, The Pink Chameleon, The Back Street Review, and Soundings Review. He has a new collection of poetry out, Storytelling.

All day in the desert

You awake wanting to do
something hot,
where your sweat
is pulled from your body,
cooling you off.
You want to dance in
the towering shadow of
the Saguaro Cactus
standing strong against
the silhouette
of the dawning of day.
You want to trek
down this roadless,
backcountry wilderness,
hats, sunscreen, water
ready for the sizzling sun.
You want to go
where roadrunners chase
lazy lizards
from their sunbathing
off of orange-tan rocks.
You want to witness
hovering hummingbirds
fly above, kissing
the bright violet flowers
of a hedgehog cactus as
if in love in early spring.
You want to run
your long fingers over
the drawn Petroglyphs
on massive boulders,
telling of a time
when natives ran wild
over this land.
You want to hear
the screech owl’s hoot
as dusk descends.
You want to bask
in the orange/blue/violet
stunning setting sun,
then go home to dream.
